Revenge of the Medium-Sized Bag
Somewhere in the past decade bags got bigger… And bigger and bigger. It was only a few years ago that the oversized Yves Saint Laurent Muse hit stores and sold out mere days after celebrities like Jennifer Lopez were seen toting the giant white bag. Big beautiful bags took over for a while, from fashion bloggers rocked the Balenciaga Weekender as a day bag to those who coveted Hermes Birkin in the 40 cm size.
Now it looks like we’re seeing a return to the medium-sized bag—and it’s about time! Enough toting your entire life around with everywhere you go. There’s no need to take your netbook, fashion mags, current read, day planner, and water bottle with you when you’re headed to the movies. Can we,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a culture, cope without toting around makeup bags big enough to be their own medium-sized bag? If the recession has taught us anything (You mean... –Ed.), it’s that sometimes less really is more–this goes for the size of your bag, too. (Oh, that. Right. –Ed.)
The thing is, a gigantic bag swamps most women. A plus size woman is simply adding to her frame when she’s lugging around a giant bag,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and an average or petite woman ends up with a bag wearing her instead of the other way around. When you’re carrying a huge bag, everyone is paying attention to that bag. We love purses as much as the next group of designer-crazed women, but when you’re headed out the door, you don’t want to be a walking advertisement.
Luckily, it seems medium-sized bags are back on the map for spring and summer 2011. While designers did show their share of big bags, medium-sized purses that pack a punch took the spotlight thanks to great design and show-stopping details. Luxury brands are finally beginning to understand that the luxury consumer wants to see that in their bag via luxe materials and dreamy interiors. So cheers for that and the return of the medium-sized purse. It’s about time!
