Huh? The process? Who initiated the process? Obviously, that’s Goodell. To claim otherwise is disingenuous.

The quotebook
“First of all, if you believe the young man is the guy, you take him,” Holmgren said. “If you are in the position to take him, you take him. At that position. You are not scared off by the fact that it has not worked in years past and I’m sure some of you have written stories about it, you read them all the time where they list all the guys that haven’t panned out. You can’t look at it that way. If you believe he is the guy you take him and then you coach him up and you make him the player you want him to be. If you decide to play a rookie quarterback, and you make that decision, the team you have has a lot to do with how successful that young man is going to be and what you ask that guy to do.
Asked to explain what happens during games, Incognito said, “There’s a fine line, especially when you play offensive line. You’re coached to play through the whistle, and I’ve always been toeing that line. Always over and back. It was a real good wake-up call getting cut in St. Louis. I was really comfortable there. I’d been there my whole career.
He said, “It comes down to me being accountable for my emotions on the field. It’s not time to place blame anywhere else except squarely on my shoulders. It’s something I have to take care of. That’s the message I’m trying to convey. I’m willing to explore all options to help myself get to a better place.”
Rams fans, pay attention. Here’s what Holmgren said about selecting a quarterback high and then playing him as a rookie.
Taking that quarterback
Monday, the NFL announced that the Jets would play the first preseason game in the new stadium, the Giants would play on the Sunday afternoon of Kickoff Weekend, and the Jets would host a Monday night game.
Saying he had spoken to Willis, Carr said, “Of course, initially you say, ‘Well, I can play.’ As a player, you wouldn’t be human if you didn’t, but after talking to him, he was very apologetic and I told him, ‘You don’t have to apologize for anything. You said what you said and you believe that and that’s fine. It’s my job to change your opinion of me,’ and that starts from day one working out here and getting around those guys and showing them that I can play the game and I want to help you guys win.
“Getting moved out of there to Buffalo, it really made me look at the error of my ways. It was really a blessing in disguise to get cut out of St. Louis.”
“He’s definitely passionate. We had a great talk. We’ve played against each other before. We’ve talked trash against each other and I understand he’s definitely passionate about winning and he’s protecting his teammates. For a guy to play that well and to have that much energy, for him not to respond a certain way, I think that would be a little strange.”
After trading for Seneca Wallace and signing Jake Delhomme, Browns president Mike Holmgren acknowledged that it wasn’t out of the question that the team could select a quarterback with the seventh pick in the first round, or even consider trading up.
Singletary’s short memory
*Coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was an assistant in Pittsburgh when linebacker Joey Porter was with the Steelers, on Porter’s signing with the Cardinals: “Other than the bulletin-board material that he’s notorious for doing once in a while, I’ve never been around a guy who has complained about Joey as a teammate. There’s a perception of Joey that I don’t buy into and our players won’t buy into.”
A restricted free agent, Whitehurst signed his tender and was then traded for a switch of second-round positions and a third-round pick in 2011. The second-round swap enables the Chargers to move up 20 spots.
“Without him I don’t think I would have made it anywhere,” Hill said of Linehan. “It was always amazing to me. We’d go into preseason games, and the first guy would go in and play, the second guy would go in and play, and then he’d call a totally different game for me.
Said Whisenhunt, “Derek will get opportunities, especially with our first unit like we’ve done in the past. But I’m also excited about Matt and seeing how he handles this situation he’s in right now.”
The New York Daily News reported other issues that have arisen between the Jets and Giants. Two years ago,nfl jersey
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a coin flip was needed to decide the choice of locker rooms. The Giants wanted stadium suites on one side, but the Jets were against it, and won that battle. In the old stadium, the Giants had their offices there and wanted to continue that in the new stadium. The Jets wouldn’t allow it, and the Giants had a new training facility built. Surprisingly, the Jets played the last regular-season game in the old stadium.
Most notable, however, is that the Seahawks then signed Whitehurst to a two-year contract worth $8 million and that includes $2 million in performance bonuses. Well, maybe not “most notable.”
He took commissioner Roger Goodell to task with some biting words, but then did a mea culpa when media reports claimed Johnson’s pointed criticism might cause Goodell to withdraw support for a potential Super Bowl in the new stadium in 2014.

Anderson’s two-year contract is worth $7.25 million, just $1.25 million than the deal signed by the Rams’ A.J. Feeley. However, Anderson’s deal includes starting-time bonuses that can be worth up to another $11 million.
He spent time with the media at the scouting combine saying he had learned his lesson after being suspended last season for lying to NCAA investigators.
Competition for Matt
When the initial reports came that Anderson was close to signing, Whisenhunt said he received a text from Leinart.
Said Johnson, “It’s for two teams, in an important media market. Hopefully the owners will agree on the merits that it is something worth doing. I don’t think one has anything to do with the other.”
The day before the Jones workout,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bryant appeared on Miami radio station WQAM and said, “All of it is just rumors. I don’t know why people are saying those things. I feel like if you’re going to write something about somebody you need to ask that person instead of writing things like that. I surround myself with positive people. I don’t have time to get into trouble. I’m trying to pursue my dream, which is to play in the NFL. … I never did anything wrong. I never committed a crime.
He will probably do just that when the league meeting begins Sunday in Orlando. The Times reported that “some” owners were “angry” with Johnson because they took his comments to be a slam at Goodell’s integrity.
“He was able to see what I did best and call the game for me as he did for everybody. That was one thing I really, really liked about him. I was able to put together some pretty good preseasons and stick around the league, all because of the things that he was doing for me.”
“Then, I was told on Friday that a coin toss had taken place at the League office and that the Jets had lost. We rejected a process in which neither team was present. The League departed from our time-honored tradition and declined the opportunity to set the matter straight with a transparent process.”
Richie’s chance
“It bothers me a lot. I just had a talk with my adviser and my agent (Wednesday), and I told them that I’m not a bad person and I’m not used to people saying bad things about me. I like to make people smile. I like to bring excitement because that’s what I do, and I want to keep it that way. I don’t want a bad image. My bad image in my childhood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is long gone. I’ve surrounded myself with bright people and I’m going to continue to stay out of trouble and move forward and play in the NFL.”
*On WNSR Radio in Nashville, former Falcons coach Jerry Glanville had this to say about the decision to trade quarterback Brett Favre to the Packers: “I had to get him out of Atlanta. … I could not sober him up. I sent him to a city where at 9 o’clock at night the only thing that’s open is Chili Joes. You can get it two ways, with or without onions. And that’s what made Brett Favre make a comeback was going to a town that closed down. If I would have traded him to New York, nobody to this day would have known who Brett Favre ever was.”
So, what of that Super Bowl? The NFL is expected to choose between New York, Miami and Tampa at the May league meeting in Dallas.
However, he couldn’t work out at the combine because of a hamstring injury, later said he wasn’t ready for his Pro Day at Oklahoma State, then tried to stage his own workout the day after quarterback Sam Bradford, but Oklahoma State said no.
“It’s a difficult thing to do. The transition from college to our league is difficult. The teams with the really solid veteran defenses, fine kicking game, pretty strong running game; you plug a young man in there he can function and survive. You plug a young man into that position and you don’t have those things, he takes it on the chin hard. Now, you make a judgment is he going to be scarred for life, or is he going to be able to handle it or if it’s the best thing for him.”

The soap opera began last weekend (March 13) when the Jets’ website reported that a coin flip would be conducted because both the Jets and Giants wanted to play the first game.
Now, Bryant will work out in his hometown of Lufkin, Texas, on March 30. Of course, he then found time Friday to attend Pacman Jones’ workout for NFL teams in New Orleans. This comes amid reports NFL teams are additionally concerned because of a supposed penchant for being late for practices and even games.
The 49ers replaced backup Shaun Hill with David Carr, which might make sense on many levels. However, the irony is that Mike Singletary probably wouldn’t be the team’s head coach had Hill not played as well as he did in the final stretch of the 2008 season when Singletary was the interim coach.
Dez does decisions
What are they thinking?
It seems Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant has a tough time with decisions. Or at least understanding the consequences of his decisions.
As the heat was building, Johnson tried to claim his words were much ado about nothing. He told the New York Times, “He (Goodell) and I just disagree, and we have disagreed in the past and probably in the future as well. I never directed anything towards Roger. Just the process we were talking about, not Roger.”
That pushed Johnson into attack mode. The Jets issued a statement saying, “An NFL coin toss has a few fundamental elements that are missing here, most notably the presence of the teams involved. That’s how it’s always done in the League, whether it’s determining the order of the draft or deciding who’s going to kick off the game. When the issue of which team would be hosting the first regular season game could not be resolved on the merits, I suggested a coin toss as the fairest way to resolve this issue. The League rejected that idea.
Now, Hill is on to Detroit, where he will be reunited with Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. The two were with the Vikings during Hill’s first three seasons in the NFL.
Turns out that the flip had taken place the day before by Goodell with his staff present, and Johnson knew the result. But he ordered the story anyway in an apparent effort to embarrass the league. Manufacturing news, and inaccurate news at that, is even more egregious than ripping the commissioner.
However, he got just a one-year contract for $725,000 with a mere $25,000 guaranteed. Incognito knows this might be his last chance.
Speaking of Carr, he was asked about comments made by linebacker Patrick Willis on Twitter, who said replacing Hill with Carr was a bad decision because Carr couldn’t play.
Most notable is that Whitehurst got that deal without having thrown even one pass in four years in a regular season game.
Asked if negativity about him is a result of the suspension, he said, “I really do feel like that’s when it started. At the same time, I manned up for what I did wrong and told the truth. I feel like I didn’t get the credit I deserve. I know God is going to take care of the rest. That’s OK, though. That’s in the past and I’ve moved forward. I’m just trying to do something better with my life. I just want to jump on an NFL team and make that team feel great about having me. … Whoever drafts me they’re going to get what they want out of me. I’m going to give it my all and play my hardest. I have a real strong passion for the game. I love football. I’m just ready to get on the field again.”
?
The tenure of Pete Carroll in Seattle will likely be largely judged on the acquisition of quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego.
But Johnson should have saved his lecture for a private discussion with the commissioner, not sending out a release to the media.
Asked whether other owners have communicated with him about his comments, Johnson said no and added, “They might have an interpretation that was unintended by me, and I’ll be happy to talk to them.”
Of course, there also could be “some” owners “angry” with Goodell for not having the coin flip with representatives of both teams present. He should have done that; there’s no reason not to.
“He’s fired up about where he is and about getting in here for the offseason program and working with the guys,” Whisenhunt said. “Rather than cringe from that, he said he was excited about the opportunity. He knew there was going to be competition but he was going to show he was ready to play and that, to me, indicated he was in a good place with it.”
Well, Woody got a woody because he was upset with Roger, and is now trying to take it back because it wasn’t such a “super” idea. You’d think an NFL owner would know better.
As for the charges of being late, Bryant said, “I’ve never been late to a game or a practice. My freshman year, and 2010 Super Bowl jerseys
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I’ve been late for a meeting. But as my career got going at Oklahoma State I (became more responsible). I overcame a lot. Everything is positive now.”
After signing quarterback Derek Anderson this past week, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said the starting job is still Matt Leinart’s to lose. “He has earned the right to be the guy,” Whisenhunt said.
It wasn’t that surprising that the Dolphins signed former Rams lineman Richie Incognito after he wasn’t tendered by the Bills as a restricted free agent. Last December, when he was waived by the Rams, Buffalo and Miami were the only two teams in the NFL that put in waiver claims for the volatile guard.
Woody is New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, who was miffed that a coin flip to decide which New York team would play the inaugural game in new Meadowlands Stadium was held without either team present.
